A good mystery is one of the best ways to turn a 10 to 12 year old into a reader. There is a question on page one, and they have to keep going to find the answer. The trick is finding one that is clever enough to respect them and not so dark that it keeps them up at night.

Here are mystery books for 10, 11 and 12 year olds that kids actually finish, sorted by age. Ages are a guide, not a rule: a confident 9-year-old may love the first group, and a 13-year-old will still enjoy the last.

Mystery books for 10 year olds

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein. Twelve kids are locked inside a brand-new, wildly high-tech library and have to solve its puzzles to find the way out. Funny, fast, and full of book references. Best for: puzzle lovers.

Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman. Emily moves to San Francisco, where a game of hiding and finding books leads her to a mysterious book and a real cipher to crack. Great for kids who like codes. (Our secret code page is a fun warm-up.)

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg. Claudia and her little brother Jamie run away to live in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and get caught up in the mystery of a beautiful angel statue. A Newbery Medal winner that still feels fresh. Best for: read-alouds.

Encyclopedia Brown by Donald J. Sobol. Short cases with the solution in the back, so readers can try to crack each one first. Best for: younger or reluctant readers, about 8 to 10.

Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett. When a famous painting disappears in Chicago, classmates Petra and Calder follow a trail of patterns, coincidences, and pentominoes. Best for: kids who like art and puzzles.

Mystery books for 11 year olds

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. Sixteen heirs, one strange will, and a puzzle that keeps twisting until the last page. A Newbery Medal winner and maybe the most-loved puzzle mystery for this age.

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. Four gifted kids answer a newspaper ad, pass a series of odd tests, and are sent undercover into a mysterious school. Kindness and teamwork win the day. Best for: readers who like long books.

Greenglass House by Kate Milford. Milo’s family runs an old inn, and over a snowed-in winter break it fills with strange guests who each seem to be hiding something. Cozy, atmospheric, and an Edgar Award winner.

The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd. Ted and his sister Kat watch their cousin step into a pod on the London Eye. When the pod comes back down, he is not in it. Ted’s brain works differently from everyone else’s, and that turns out to be the key.

Holes by Louis Sachar. Stanley Yelnats is sent to a camp where boys dig holes all day in a dry lakebed, and slowly realizes they are looking for something. Part mystery, part family legend, and a Newbery Medal winner.

Mystery books for 12 year olds

The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson. Candice finds an old letter in her grandmother’s attic that points to a puzzle, a fortune, and an injustice buried in her small Southern town’s past. Clever and moving, with real history in it. Best for: ages 10 and up, and great for discussion.

The Enola Holmes Mysteries by Nancy Springer. Sherlock Holmes’s younger sister sets out on her own when her mother disappears, and turns out to be every bit the detective her brother is. Start with The Case of the Missing Marquess.

Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens. Two friends at an English boarding school run a secret detective society, until they stumble on a real crime. Classic whodunit structure, written for this age. Best for: ages 11 and up; it does involve a death, so preview if your reader is sensitive.

A new mystery with a little magic: The Truth Seekers

I’ll add one more, with a little bias, because I wrote it.

The Truth Seekers is Book One of The Adventures of Stella and Rylee, a clean middle-grade fantasy mystery for ages 9 to 12. On their first day in Castle Hill, Maine, thirteen-year-old twins Stella and Rylee hear their new history teacher say he knew their father, who died when they were five and whom nobody will talk about. Then they find a book in their attic with their own names stamped on the cover. Stella dreams the future, Rylee always knows exactly where to be, and a boy at a crossroads is running out of time.

It has the questions-on-every-page pull of a mystery, plus a gentle dose of magic, and it is clean from start to finish. You can pre-order the Kindle edition on Amazon, and the parent and teacher guide has spoiler-light discussion questions for book clubs and classrooms.

Tips for picking a mystery your child will finish

  1. Ask what kind of puzzle they like. Codes and ciphers point to Book Scavenger; logic and clues point to The Westing Game; adventure points to Mr. Lemoncello.
  2. Check the scare level. Most books here have tension but nothing graphic. Murder Most Unladylike and The Parker Inheritance touch heavier subjects, so read the first chapter together.
  3. Read the first chapter aloud. If they ask “and then what?”, you have your book.
  4. Make it a game. Pause before the reveal and have everyone guess. It is the most fun way to read a mystery as a family.
