Books About Twins for Middle Grade Readers: 11 Picks Kids Love

By R.R. Anders 6 min read

Twin sisters in an attic: Rylee in a cream cardigan holding a brass compass, and Stella in an olive military-style jacket holding a glowing open book

Kids who are twins want to see themselves on the page. Kids who are not twins are just as curious: what would it be like to have someone with your face who thinks completely differently than you do?

Twin stories are great for exactly that reason. They are really stories about identity, loyalty, and figuring out who you are when everyone keeps mixing you up with somebody else. Below are books about twins that middle grade readers return to again and again, sorted by what kind of reader they suit best. Every one is a real book you can find at most libraries.

Twin adventures with magic

The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer. Twins Alex and Conner Bailey fall through the pages of an old fairy-tale book and land in a world where Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood, and the Evil Queen are real. Alex is the careful bookworm and Conner is the jokester, and the series gets a lot of fun out of that. Best for: ages 8 to 12 who love fairy tales.

Twintuition: Double Vision by Tia and Tamera Mowry. Identical twins Cassie and Caitlyn start seeing glimpses of the future, and have to work together to change what they see. Written by real-life identical twins, it gets the sibling banter right. Best for: ages 8 to 12, especially readers who like a touch of mystery.

The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. Twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace and their older sister Mallory move into a crumbling old house and discover a field guide to the hidden creatures living all around them. Short books with wonderful illustrations. Best for: ages 8 to 11 and reluctant readers.

Twin stories set in the real world

Lisa and Lottie by Erich Kästner. Two girls meet at summer camp and realize they are twins who were separated as babies, so they secretly swap places to get their family back together. If the plot sounds familiar, this classic inspired the movie The Parent Trap. Best for: ages 8 to 12 and family read-alouds.

Double Act by Jacqueline Wilson. Identical twins Ruby and Garnet take turns telling their story as their family goes through big changes after losing their mom. Ruby is loud and Garnet is quiet, and the book is honest about what happens when twins start wanting different things. Best for: ages 9 to 12. It handles grief, so it is a good one to read together.

The Twins at St. Clare’s by Enid Blyton. Pat and Isabel O’Sullivan are furious about being sent to boarding school and decide to be as difficult as possible. Midnight feasts, pranks, and a slow change of heart follow. Best for: ages 8 to 11 who love school stories.

Sweet Valley Twins, created by Francine Pascal. Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield are identical sixth graders with opposite personalities: one is responsible, the other is always up to something. Light, quick, and very readable. Best for: ages 9 to 12 who want an easy series to binge.

The Bobbsey Twins by Laura Lee Hope. Two sets of twins, Bert and Nan, and Flossie and Freddie, solve small mysteries and get into gentle trouble. Old-fashioned and sweet. Best for: younger readers, about 6 to 9, or as a read-aloud.

For older middle grade readers (12 and up)

Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Paterson. On a small island in the Chesapeake Bay, Louise feels completely overshadowed by her twin sister Caroline. A Newbery Medal winner about jealousy, identity, and finding your own place. Best for: ages 12 and up. It is quieter and more serious than most books here.

Many Waters by Madeleine L’Engle. Sandy and Dennys Murry, the twins from the A Wrinkle in Time family, are flung back to the time of Noah. A strange and thoughtful book. Best for: ages 12 and up. Parents may want to preview it, since it has some older themes.

A new one: The Truth Seekers

I’ll add one more, with a little bias, because I wrote it.

The Truth Seekers is Book One of The Adventures of Stella and Rylee, a clean middle-grade fantasy mystery for ages 9 to 12. Stella and Rylee Martin are thirteen-year-old identical twins and total opposites. Stella is street smart, dramatic, and the narrator. Rylee reads the student handbook for fun and always knows exactly where to be. When they move to a small town in Maine, they find a book in their attic with their own names stamped on the cover, and learn that their two very different gifts only work if they work together.

If your reader liked the sibling banter in The Land of Stories or the twin visions in Twintuition, this one is for them. You can pre-order the Kindle edition on Amazon, meet the twins on the characters page, or read Stella’s own twin rules.

How to pick the right twin book

  1. Match the twin dynamic. Some readers want twins who are best friends; others want twins who clash. Double Act and Jacob Have I Loved lean into the conflict. The Land of Stories and The Truth Seekers show twins who argue and still have each other’s backs.
  2. Check the reading level, not just the age. The Bobbsey Twins reads young; Many Waters reads old. Read the first page together if you are not sure.
  3. Use it as a conversation starter. Twin books are a natural way to talk about how siblings can love each other and still be very different people. Our parent and teacher guide has questions you can borrow.
